Big Hat No Cattle

Big hat, No cattle.

“Big hat, no cattle”, is an American saying referring to someone who has spent his Dollars on appearance but lacks substantial wealth. An example of this would be owning an expensive car but having very little to show in your retirement account or owning fine clothing but carrying debt on your credit cards.

One of the images on the Growing Wealth website (https://growingwealth.co.za/) is of a bicycle with keys, a phone, and camera lying on the table. The picture is meant to allude to a sense of well being, adventure, and freedom. It was one of two photos that I downloaded from Pexels, a ‘free image’ website. The other picture considered, that I eventually decided against, was of a blue Ferrari with some beautiful architecture in the back ground.

The pictures were to be the background of a page on investments and needed to have the theme of Wealth and Abundance.  I really planned to use the Ferrari but at the last moment switched it. Personal reasons. What moves me in life and gets me excited is; travel, a camera, a leather backpack, bikes packed on the car and ready for the weekend adventure, a surfboard and time to use it. I appreciate the freedom of time, and choice. These things, for me, speak of wealth.

Very often peoples buying decisions lead to having things now but get in the way of long-term financial success. Would our spending and investing habits be different if the value of our retirement accounts were posted over our homes for all to see?

The dictionary definition of wealth is; An abundance of valuable possessions or money. But, would you trade your health for possessions? Or if you did not have health, would you trade money for its return?

True wealth then, would have three aspects: Financial, Health, and Hope.

Make more, spend less. And consider the true cost of things:

  • Credit Card interest and costs,
  • Credit scores and ratings,
  • Procrastination.

Debt is not your friend, avoid it. Borrowing money is like wetting ones bed, the warmth and release is comforting at first, but is soon followed by the harsh reality of having to clean up. Debt is the same, it’s nice to have what we want now but cleaning up can take years.

On this note I wish you all a wonderful twenty eighteen and suggest that a wonderful gift to give yourself and your family is a determination to remain fit and in good health, subdue debt, and build an abundant attitude and life.

Wear that big hat once you have the cattle.
